Jeff R. Hawkins

Jeff R. Hawkins is Vice President of Hawkins Law PC, where he practices primarily in the areas of elder law, estate and business planning, and trust and estate administration (probate law). He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in 1988 and his law degree from the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1992.

The Indiana Supreme Court and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana admitted Jeff to practice before them in 1992. The Illinois Supreme Court admitted Jeff to the Illinois Bar in 2012.

The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) has engaged Jeff actively since 1993. His Board of Governors memberships span 1997-98, 2006-10, and 2012-16. He was elected Chair of the Probate, Trust & Real Property (PTRP) Section and the House of Delegates for 2009-10. He chaired the Professional Legal Education and Admission to the Bar Section (PLEADS) in its inaugural year, 2000-01, and the Young Lawyers Section for 1997-98. Jeff is also a member of the Business Law Section; Solo, Small Firm & General Practice; Agricultural Law; and Elder Law Sections. He has participated on the Clients Assistance Fund; Long-range Planning; Budget; Annual Meeting Planning; Specialization; and Attorney Surrogate Rule Committees.

The PTRP and Elder Law Sections engaged Jeff in the spring of 2012 as counsel to represent them as amici curiae (friend of the court) parties in estate's appeal before the Indiana Supreme Court. The Indiana Supreme Court denied the main appellant's petition for transfer, so Jeff wrote corrective legislation that the Indiana General Assembly passed in its 2013 legislative session.

Later in 2012, the ISBA Nominating Committee nominated Jeff as the next ISBA Vice President and he was elected by the ISBA general membership at the 2012 Assembly Luncheon at the ISBA's 2012 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis on October 26, 2012. Jeff's vice presidency made him an ex officio member of the Indiana Bar Foundation's Board of Directors and Chairman of ISBA's Membership and Membership Benefits Committee.

The Indiana State Bar Association’s Trust & Estate Specialty Board certified Jeff as a Board Certified Indiana Trust & Estate Lawyer in 2007, elected him as a Board member in 2009, and elected him Co-Chairman in 2010 to serve until April 19, 2013.

Jeff became a member of the Illinois State Bar Association in 2012.

The Indiana Super Lawyers magazine included Jeff in its estate planning and probate lawyers list in its 2013 edition in print and online at:

The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) has elected Jeff to its 2011 class of Fellows. Jeff is now one of ACTEC's 41 Indiana Fellows. ACTEC is a national organization of approximately 2,600 lawyers elected to membership by demonstrating the highest level of integrity, commitment to the profession, competence and experience as trust and estate counselors. information about ACTEC appears on the College's website at: http://www.actec.org/default.asp.

Jeff is a member of American Bar Association Sections on Business Law, and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law; the Fellows of the Indiana Bar Foundation; the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (and its Indiana Chapter); and the Sullivan County Bar Association.

Several organizations (ISBA, Indianapolis Bar Association (IBA), Stock Yards Bank, etc.) have sought Jeff’s contributions as an author and faculty member to teach legal subjects to lawyers to satisfy their continuing legal education requirements. The Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (ICLEF) has engaged Jeff on its Board of Directors (1998-99) and as a frequent faculty member in its continuing legal education courses. These are some of Jeff’s many faculty contributions:
